Surreal, indeed - with each passing year the Egypt thing takes on more and more mystery...love the ambience of the wind blowing across that steppe in Giza, into the microphones - couple that with Hamza El-Din's mournful oud and we have a sweetly sad treasure, certainly one to add on as part of the overall Egypt experience of the next three nights. The stuff the band played with the locals is absolutely my favourite part of these shows - I mean, let's face it: "It's All Over Now" and "Beat it on Down the Line", etc. don't really fit with what is going on here. Didn't anyone think to play "Blues for Allah" in all its 25-30 minute glory, with crickets and whatnot?

Nice Hamza jams. Not wild about the OA...but the Giza shows were by no means the Dead at their best.

A Different Time and Place
Terrific music, both haunting and whimsical. The whole Dead adventure in Egypt is surreal. It's impossible to imagine a similar thing happening today. Blues for Allah? Goodness ...
Hamza El Din's "Ollin Arageed" is wonderful and all the jamming here is interesting and worth listening to. Great stuff.
